Student Body Of Christ Secretary
This year, I was the secretary for Student Body of Christ (SBOC). It was my responsibility to take notes at meetings and send them out to the rest of the board, send out emails to the general body to remind them of Bible study and other events coming up, add and remove people from our listserv, as well as other tasks. I worked along with the five other members of the e-board to plan various different events such as our Welcome Celebration, Sex, Dating & Relationships (SDR) Seminar, our annual revival, as well as other mini events.
The Bible study progressed in different ways this year. We introduced an event to kick off the beginning of the year outside of Bible study and a prayer night every Friday. Also, we incorporated more outreach events on campus in TUC and in front of Subway. Everything that was incorporated went well and it helped us expand our horizon and tear down limitations. Another thing we did was become a tax-exempt organization and open a bank account so that we can have fundraisers. SBOC had a credit card in the past, but something happened with it and we could not get any information on it since it was in someone else’s name, so we had to start the entire process over and apply for a new one.
This was a very humbling position. Since I was responsible for sending the emails out, there were times when I would make mistakes and I would have to send out a follow-up email correcting my mistake. There were even times when the follow-up email was still incorrect. These mistakes encouraged me to triple check everything before I sent it out or shared it with anyone.
I have learned a lot from this position. I have learned the ins and outs of managing a campus ministry/organization. I learned most of the details that went into planning all of the events. Through delegating tasks, I learned about the roles of the other members on board.
As the secretary, a lot of work was placed on me to keep everything organized and to make sure that everyone had the information they needed. It helped me manage getting my own school work done and the necessary work done for SBOC in a timely manner.
As the secretary of SBOC, I grew professionally and personally. Professionally, I learned how to separate my friendships from my decisions when we were discussing topics within meetings. Sometimes it’s hard to separate friendships from business, especially when you are friends with the people prior to working with them. Although there were moments when we did not always agree with each other, we were able to resolve our problems. Personally, I grew in leadership. I learned how to manage other people by delegating tasks.
I will take the organization skills that go into running an organization and apply it to my future medical practice. Sometimes it can be hard managing people because everyone has different personalities. I am thankful for these leadership experiences that I have had so far because they continually prepare me for my future with working with people.
This experience has helped me prepare for next year, as I take the role as the president. As the secretary and from living with this year’s president, I was able to learn and see most of the basics that went into SBOC. I was able to see the planning and all of the hard work that my roommate went through for this to be such a successful year. Although she has graduated, I will still be living with her next year, so I will be able to ask her for wisdom and advice when I need it.
