Year-In-Review
This year has been a major growth year for me. After not making it into the nursing program last, year, I decided to retake classes to reapply this year. I decided not to give up on the nursing program, because of my determination to make it in. I have such a passion for helping people, and for the medical field that I could not give up on my dream. Last year, I was too comfortable. I was used to thinking that everything was just going to come easy to me. I realized quickly that everything was not going to always come easy to me and I would have to fight and work hard for many things that I deemed worth having. This year has taught me endurance. There has been many different times throughout the year, that I have wanted to give up and just quit, but something inside me would not let me. I learned not to give up no matter how hard something may get. In a way, I am actually happy that I did not make it into the program this year, because it has given me time to develop my relationship with Jesus, grow and mature as a person, and become more involved in events on campus.
After not making it into the nursing program last year, I had to figure out what classes I would take this year and what I would do. I decided to retake a few classes to bring up my nursing GPA, and minor in Spanish. After taking Spanish for a couple of weeks, I realized that it was not going to work for me, so I decided to minor in business instead, because I hope to open my own medical practice someday. In addition to taking certain classes over, I took some of my non-nursing classes required for my nursing degree early, so that I when I am taking my nursing classes, I will not be stressed out, and I will have some time to complete my classes for my minor in business.
In addition to academic growth, I have grown spiritually and socially. Spiritually, my relationship with Jesus has grown drastically. Over the past year, I have spent a lot of time learning more about who Jesus is and what He does. Strengthening my relationship with Jesus is the main reason why I have grown so much over this past year. I have learned what things I should and should not do. I have learned more on how to treat, and communicate with people. I have been and will continue on this journey to improve and develop myself as a person, by living how Jesus did and by applying His laws and Ways to my life. Jesus is the center of my life, so for me not to include Him in everything and anything that I do is selfish, especially for all the blessings He has given me.
This year, I have made many different life-changing relationships and met many different people through networking. Due to the extra time that I had this year, I decided to get more involved with various organizations on campus. Many of the relationships I have made are with people that I hope to be in contact with the rest of my life. The friends that I have made this year are with people that hold me accountable in different aspects of my life and are people who I know that will be there for me in my times of need. They have taught me valuable life lessons and inspired me to continue moving forward, and not to regress in any areas of my life. My friends have really helped me enjoy this year, by building strong, intimate relationships with them. I am really grateful that I met them, and that they are part of my core support system.
During spring break, I decided to go with ADVANCE on their annual Corporate Excursion to Chicago. ADVANCE is a professional development organization that focuses on the success of minority students. After deciding to minor in business, I thought that this trip would be a good idea to go on to improve my networking and professional skills, and that is what it did. On the trip, we visited various different companies and learned about the different positions within each company, and the work environment of each. The trip was very conducive to my career development, because it taught me the importance of networking. I learned what a typical day in a business setting would be like. Additionally, I learned the importance of an elevator speech, and how to deliver one effectively. The excursion helped me be more confident in introducing myself to people, and telling others more about myself, interests, and purpose. Also, a majority of the companies we visited had people of color speak to us. It showed me that I can be successful in corporate America if that is where I choose to be or end up going.
One of the main reasons that I am going into nursing is because I have a deep passion for helping people and seeing people happy. I do not like seeing people suffering or struggling. I have compassion for people and am always concerned about the well-being of others. I am the type of person that will put everyone else and their needs before myself and my own needs. This summer, I have the opportunity to go Kentucky with one of my friends to work for a family of six. One of the children has cerebral palsy, which is who my friend will be taking care of. I will be helping one of the parents take care of the rest of the children, as well as help the household run smoothly. Although I am getting paid for this, I feel like it is so much more than the money. I see this as giving my time to help out people who are in need. I want to leave an impact on this family and leave their lives better afterwards, than it is currently. One of my goals in life is to leave things better than they were before I arrived. Ultimately, I want to leave a positive footprint wherever I go.
Looking forward, I see many positive things to come. I have decided to take up many leadership positions next year that will continue to develop me as a leader. I am an Outreach Committee Chair for my Bible study, Student Body of Christ. Hopefully, I will be the Community Service Chair for ADVANCE, a mentor for AMBITION, and a Turner Ambassador. I hope to earn leadership positions in each of these roles, along with being accepted to the nursing program. With these positions, I hope to leave a positive impact on all of the people that I encounter. I want to continue to keep growing as a person, and not become stagnant in this process. Also, I want to continue to learn what my gifts are and what my purpose here on earth is. This year, I have learned patience and that I should not be stressed or worried about what is coming next for me. I will use what I have learned this year to continue to move forward and not to stress about anything. I will continue to plan in advance for things that I want to do and not let any situation harbor me from accomplishing my dreams and desires. Some advice that I have myself for the next few years and the rest of my life is to persevere and not to grow weary. I know that I cannot control everything, and some things I just have to let be. Next year, I am going to live my life day to day, and not limit myself to what I am comfortable with. I plan to continue to expand and exhaust my resources.

1 Peter 4:11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
