Expected Project Start Date: August 5, 2014
Expected Project End Date: April 24,2015
Project Information
1. Provide a detailed abstract of your proposal honors experiential learning project.
Next year, if selected, I will be a Darwin T. Turner Ambassador. I, along with about forty other selected Turner Ambassadors, will be “the faces” of the Darwin T. Turner Scholarship program. It is our responsibility to represent Turner in a positive manner, promoting academic excellence, and diversity. Over the summer or early fall semester, we will be required to attend a retreat to get to know each other more, and learn what we must do as ambassadors. Additionally, throughout the year, we must help organize and run different Turner events. For example, in the fall we will have to organize and run the Turner Fall Induction Ceremony, which formally inducts all of the new Turner Scholars into the program. Another event that we are responsible for is the annual Student Leadership Conference in the spring. We are responsible of helping plan, setup, and run this event for students that may be required or choose to attend.
Also, we will be part of different committees. We are able to be part of either the Community Service Committee, Diversity Committee, Social Committee, or Education Committee. I would lik e to be a part of the Community Service Committee. Within this committee, I will be responsible for finding different service opportunities for Scholars to participate in. I will be responsible for contacting each service site, researching the details, getting the site approved by my advisor, and then getting the information out to my fellow Turner Scholars. Additionally, I would be responsible for finding or providing methods of transportation for those who decide to go, for the day of the event.
In addition to being the spokespeople of Turner, we will also be mentors to incoming freshman scholars. Each ambassador will be given one freshman scholar as a mentee. We will be responsible of meeting with, and staying in contact with our mentees. We will serve as examples for our mentees, as well as our fellow Scholars.
As a Turner Ambassador, I will be given the opportunity to build and develop my leadership skills. It will give me the chance to show initiative and set an example for my peers. I will be given the ability to represent my fellow Scholars in a positive manner, and show why we stand apart from the crowd. Also, I will able to be a servant-leader, by being available for my fellow scholars whenever they need me. Furthermore, as a part of the Community Service Committee, I will show what it means to be a servant-leader by showing others what it means and how to serve others.
Due to the various activities and events that we must plan and lead, we will meet multiple times a month in a group. Also, we will have to meet with our mentees often.
Clearly and thoroughly address how each of the following elements will be exhibited in your work:
2. Connection of Learning Objectives within the Honors Thematic Area (identified above)
Being a Turner Ambassador will give me the ability to relate, communicate, and work effectively with my peers. Since we are responsible for planning numerous events, we will constantly be communicating with each other. We will be responsible of making sure we are all on the same page. Within my Community Service Committee, I will have to effectively communicate with the other members to make sure we select a service site that will be engaging and interesting for our Scholars.
Also, I will be able to identify the various characteristics of a leader in a given situation/role. According to the University of Oregon’s, Leadership Characteristics, some characteristics include being proactive/reactive, organized, and resourceful. In different situations, I will have to think in advance about what may or may not go wrong in a situation, and be able to react quickly in that case. I will have to think about preventative measures to stop something from going wrong before it even has the opportunity to. Also, I will have to be extremely organized to ensure that I will complete all of my tasks that I am assigned to do, as well as knowing my deadlines, and the dates of every event that I have to attend. I will have to be resourceful and exhaust my resources, by giving my all to make sure I have done everything in my will to have something that I am responsible for go without error.
3. Connection to Goals and Academic Theories (include reference list, as appropriate)
Becoming a Turner Ambassador will help expand and further develop my leadership skills. With my aspiration to open my own medical practice sometime in the future, I will have to know how to be a servant leader, and communicate effectively with people. I will have to take responsibility of many things, and I must know how to handle situations in the proper manner. I will learn how to be more assertive, and take initiative. It is very important for me to be bold and of strong courage when working with and leading others. As the entrepreneur, I will be the one that everyone looks to for answers to their questions, and through this role, I will be given the experience required to be successful.
Daniel Goleman, a psychologist, explains in his article, Leadership That Gets Results, the concept of Emotional Intelligence, how leaders should decide on how to react in different situations, and what it requires to get effective results from a leader. Goleman goes into detail on how one can grow his/her emotional intelligence, different leadership styles, and what combination of those leadership styles will yield the best results. After deep analysis of this article, I can learn what styles of leadership will be the most effective for me to exhibit in certain situations. When presented with a challenging situation, I can refer to what I have read within this article and apply it to the problem at hand.
In the book, The Leadership Challenge, written by Barry Z. Kouzes and James M. Posner, Kouzes and Posner provide Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. They offer research and knowledge on what causes people to follow a leader, what leaders must be committed to, and how effective leaders must lead by example. As an ambassador, I will be the focus of attention of my peers, as well as outsiders looking into the program. Due to this, I must know what to and not to do. When it comes to my peers, I will have to set an example that will encourage them. This book will teach me what it means to be committed to being a leader, and what steps I must take to do so.
4. Initiative, Independence, and/or Creativity
As a nursing major, and business minor, I have the ability to bring different creative and innovative ideas to Turner. As a member of the Community Service Committee, I will bring and execute many different ideas for community service opportunities that pertain to various diverse opportunities. Additionally, since Turner is a diversity scholarship, I think that we should do more diverse events to engage the entire campus about what diversity really means.
5. Reflection
Due to the various events that I will contribute to, and my role as a mentor, I will spend time to write about and reflect on each event. I will record how I felt about it, what I think went well, and what I could do better in each situation.
6. Dissemination
Throughout my experience, I will make sure I involve others in some of the events that I will partake in through Turner. I will share my overall experience with my mentee, and fellow Turner scholars. I will show them that they can do so much within our program.
